Law enforcers detain Russian agents preparing a terrorist attack in Kyiv
The Security Service of Ukraine and the National Police detained agents of the Russian Main Intelligence Directorate who were preparing a terrorist attack in Kyiv. The crime was to take place in a crowded place in the capital.
This was reported by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) on Wednesday, October 23.
A terrorist attack was being prepared in Kyiv
As a result of a special operation, two Russian agents were detained who were planning to prepare an improvised explosive device and detonate it in a crowded location in Kyiv.
According to the counterintelligence of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the invaders' goal was to cause the maximum number of civilian casualties in Kyiv. The enemy aimed to create panic among the civilian population.
For the terrorist attack, Russian intelligence remotely recruited a 20-year-old resident of Zaporizhzhia who was looking for "easy" money in Telegram channels.
After recruitment, the agent received detailed instructions from the occupiers on how to make an explosive device using improvised materials.
The explosive, which was to be activated with two mobile phones, was to be retrieved from a hidden cache. The occupiers planned to send the location of the cache to the woman right before the attack.
"It was established that she was in contact with a regular officer of the Russian GRU, who was located in the temporarily occupied part of Zaporizhzhia region," the SBU clarified.
The agent involved her 26-year-old partner in cooperation with the aggressor. Their test assignment was to set fire to Ukrainian military equipment near Zaporizhzhia.
How the SBU counteracted saboteurs
To prevent the crime, SBU counterintelligence agents caught both traitors "in the act" as they attempted to set fire to an infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) that was performing a mission on the southern front.
At the scene, the authorities seized tools of the crime and mobile phones from the detainees. The phone contained evidence of the agents' criminal activities.
Investigators from the Security Service informed them of their suspicion of treason in a time of war.
The offenders are being held in custody without the right to bail. They face life imprisonment and asset confiscation.
Earlier, we reported that SBU officers staged the assassination of businessman and head of a public organization, Hennadii Baibutian. In reality, the entrepreneur is alive, and the crime's mastermind has been arrested.
Additionally, the Security Service of Ukraine, in cooperation with the National Police, prevented the illegal sale of trophy weapons and ammunition in four regions of the country.
