The Security Service of Ukraine, together with the National Police, detained a Russian agent who tried to blow up a police unit in the center of Kyiv. He faces up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of assets.

This was reported by the SSU on Tuesday, November 26.

What is known about the Russian agent

Law enforcement officers reported that, on the orders of Russian intelligence services, the man carried out a terrorist attack in central Kyiv on November 17. That day, a police squad responded to a call about domestic violence in a multi-story building in the Pechersk district of the capital. As the officers attempted to enter the apartment, a "tripwire" with an F-1 grenade was triggered at the entrance.

"It turned out that no one lived in the apartment, and the "call" with a woman's voice to the 102 hotline was a fake, meant to lure and kill the police officers. This terrorist attack was planned by Russian intelligence services," the message states.

According to the SSU, to carry out this task, Russia remotely recruited a 43-year-old resident of Kyiv region, who had already served six sentences for robbery, theft, and escape from prison. Before setting up the "tripwire", the man completed a "test" task: he set fire to a relay box of Ukrzaliznytsia on the outskirts of the capital and sent the corresponding videos to his handler.

Afterward, the recidivist received step-by-step instructions to carry out a terrorist attack against Ukrainian law enforcement officers. He rented an apartment in central Kyiv, set up a "tripwire" with a live grenade, and installed video cameras to record the detonation in real-time. Fortunately, no police officers were injured during the explosion.

Detention of a collaborator

Shortly after the incident, law enforcement officers detained the suspect "in hot pursuit".

What punishment does an enemy agent face?

SSU investigators served the offender a notice of suspicion of committing a terrorist act (Part 2 Art. 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The offender is currently in custody. He faces up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.

On the evening of November 23, a shooting took place in Kyiv, killing one person and injuring two others. The police opened a criminal investigation.

Soon after, it became known that the incident took place at the Sky Loft hotel, and a video of the shooting was posted online. The police detained the shooter and a pre-trial restraint has been imposed on him.
